Doing digital research requires researchers to keep themselves, their respondents, and their data safe. This is becoming increasingly critical and complex. Both skills and devices need regular updating to stay secure.
In collaboration with the Centre for Investigative Journalism, Methods Lab is hosting a bespoke data security methods session. This two-hour session offers a comprehensive introduction to information security (InfoSec), data security and source protection. The class introduces basic strategies and tools to improve both personal security and the security of those you work and communicate with.
Participants will learn how to:
Browse the web more safely
Conduct safe online searches on sensitive topics (to avoid being red-flagged)
Encrypt sensitive communications
Secure personal data
Protect respondents’ anonymity
Conduct threat assessments,
Use end-to-end encrypted communication tools
It will be taught by Tansy Hoskins, an award-winning journalist and author who investigates the global fashion industry. This work has taken her to Bangladesh, Kenya, Macedonia, and the Topshop warehouses in Solihull. Her latest book is “The Anti-Capitalist Book Of Fashion” (Pluto Press).
The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) is a think-tank, alternative university and an experimental laboratory set up to train a new generation of reporters in the tools of investigative, in-depth, and long-form journalism across all media.
